Sri Lanka's beautiful landscape has led to it's nickname as The Pearl of the Indian Ocean, it is full of lush tropical forests, white beaches and diverse landscape throughout along with a rich biodiversity.It's also known for having one of the longest documented histories in the world.



The history of Sri Lanka is very colorful. It was at first inhabited originally by the Vedda, then the Singhalese came in 6th century B.C. and the Tamil in the 11th and 12th centuries A.D. The spice trade on the island was controlled successively by Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British traders from the 12th century. It became a British colony in 1798 and achieved independence in 1948. In 1972 the island was declared a republic.
